This New York Times Notable Book is 鈥?lt;/b>a vigorous, humorous debut that paints a delightful portrait of a distant land鈥?(Kirkus Reviews).
聽
Yemen is arguably the most fascinating and least known country in the Arab world. Located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, it has been long regarded by classical geographers as a fabulous land where flying serpents guard sacred incense groves. But our current ideas of Yemen have been hijacked by images of terrorist strongholds, drone attacks, and diplomatic tensions.
聽
After living thirteen years among the Yemenis, Tim Mackintosh-Smith reminds us there is another Arabia. 鈥淗is characters are not the mustachioed bandidos of old, but men who have worked oil rigs, fought civil wars, harvested frankincense and myrrh聽.聽.聽. The places he visits do not serve as mere backdrops for the author鈥檚 ruminations on the ills of modern life; rather, they are celebrated and assessed for their specific qualities: hot, dusty, endlessly fascinating places with histories that cry out for attention鈥?(Kirkus Reviews).
聽
鈥淸Mackintosh-Smith] seems incapable of writing a dull sentence, and in him the scholar, the linguist and the storyteller swap hats with marvelous speed.鈥?鈥?lt;i>The New York Times Book Review
聽
鈥淭his is no ordinary travelogue, but an impressionistic exploration of a non-Western land by an experienced observer聽.聽.聽. Offers an opportunity for dedicated armchair travelers to delight in a land few Westerners will actually visit.鈥?鈥?lt;i>Publishers Weekly
聽
鈥淗is book is a delightful literary exercise that at the same time spoon-feeds a great deal of information about his adopted country.鈥?鈥?lt;i>Middle East Quarterly

Three years into a financial crisis that shows no sign of loosening its grip, a young couple make the unpopular decision to teach English in Saudi Arabia. The choice of Saudi Arabia is based primarily on the best salary offer, an all expenses paid round trip flight and secondarily to satiate a desire to explore a country steeped in mystery and taboo. Little do they know that the experience will come with a price and change their lives in a profound way, witnessing human rights violations that go unchecked even up to today and an ultra-conservative culture wrestling with tradition and modernity.

A Year Under Sharia Law is written as a travel memoir with vignettes of daily life and interactions with the community at large. It was also written to shine a spotlight on the plight of impoverished ladies who come to Saudi Arabia in the hopes of earning a salary to send money back to their family. They find work as nannies and house maids primarily. These ladies are often stripped of their rights in a patriarchy that makes them prime targets for unspeakable abuses. Their passports are held by their Saudi employees and they essentially become prisoners. This memoir is not only dedicated to them and their plight but also the tireless and dangerous work done by journalists who are critical of Saudi Arabia鈥檚 human rights record. Some have paid the ultimate price.

While Pashtun is the pre-eminent language of much of southern Afghanistan, other languages are commonly used by parts of the population as well. One of these is Baluchi, which is the most widely spoken language in Nimroz Province of southwestern Afghanistan. Baluchi is also spoken in some of the other provinces of southern Afghanistan, although in much smaller percentages of the total population. Beyond the Afghan border, millions of additional Baluchi speakers live in southeastern Iran and southwestern Pakistan. These Baluchi-speaking regions in Pakistan and Iran are among the poorest in their respective nations and have both been subject to violence unleashed by Baluchi separatist groups.
Originally a warrior people, the Baluchi claim that their ancestors decimated the armies of Alexander the Great as the Greeks were returning from India. They are believed by some to be related to the Kurds and the original Chaldean rulers of Babylon, although this belief is contested. The Baluchi are thought to have migrated to the region between the 6th and 14th. In the 19th century, the Baluchi often fought with the British colonial armies that were trying to expand the boundaries of India. Since the British departure from the region in 1947 after the creation of Pakistan, the Baluchi tribes have periodically waged guerrilla attacks against Pakistan. Overpowering Pakistani and Iranian air raids on Baluchi villages in 1974 have left strong feelings of resentment among the Baluchi people and led to a rise in nationalism. Thousands have died since 2008 in the separatist struggle.
The homeland of the Baluchi is strategically located in Southwest Asia in an expanse of desert that is bigger than France and spans southern Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, including the north shore of the Arabian Sea. U.S. policymakers have been concerned about control of the region and access to the warm waters of the Arabian Sea since the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan during the 1980s.
This book, produced by Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC), provides comprehensive information about Baluchi Language and Culture. Chapter topics include religion, traditions, family life and differences in the lifestyles of urban and rural populations as well as detailed discussion of geography, history and their economy, form of government, society and security and much more.
119 pages; dozens of photos, illustration and charts in full color.
This is a Print Replica that maintains the formatting and layout of the original edition and offers many of the advantages of standard Kindle books.
