Contains Active Table of Contents (HTML)聽聽and include a bonus link to the free audio book.

The Book of Five Rings聽(聽浜旇吉鏇嘎犅?lt;i>Go Rin no Sho)聽is a text on聽kenjutsu聽and the聽martial arts聽in general, written by the Japanese swordsman聽Miyamoto Musashi聽around 1645. There have been various translations made over the years, and it enjoys an audience considerably broader than only that of martial artists and people across聽East Asia: for instance, some foreign business leaders find its discussion of conflict and taking the advantage to be relevant to their work in a business context. The modern-day聽Hy艒h艒 Niten Ichi-ry奴聽employs it as a manual of technique and philosophy.

Musashi establishes a "no-nonsense" theme throughout the text. For instance, he repeatedly remarks that technical flourishes are excessive, and contrasts worrying about such things with the principle that all technique is simply a method of cutting down one's opponent. He also continually makes the point that the understandings expressed in the book are important for combat on any scale, whether a one-on-one聽duel聽or a massive聽battle. Descriptions of principles are often followed by admonitions to "investigate this thoroughly" through practice rather than trying to learn them by merely reading.

Musashi describes and advocates a two-sword fencing style (nit艒jutsu): that is, wielding both聽katana聽and聽wakizashi, contrary to the more traditional method of wielding the katana two-handed. However, he only explicitly describes wielding two swords in a section on fighting against many adversaries. The stories of his many duels rarely refer to Musashi himself wielding two swords, although, since they are mostly oral traditions, their details may be inaccurate. Musashi states within the volume that one should train with a long sword in each hand, thereby training the body and improving one's ability to use two blades simultaneously
(wikipedia)

The original edition of The Event Horse was published in 1973. The Foreward was written by HRH Princess Anne who states that this is the first book that deals with all three phases of a three-day event. Since then many books have been written on eventing but this edition might be viewed as a classic, and most of the information in it is as relevant today as it was nearly fifty years ago. Sheila Willcox was, without doubt, one of the most talented horse people of the last century. She combined huge determination and courage with meticulous attention to detail and expert knowledge in all things pertaining to the care and training of horses, whether they were to event, do dressage, show jump or simply shine in the show ring.
She wrote this text book after her disastrous fall in 1971 when she broke her back and was never to event again. She is credited with being the first 鈥榩rofessional鈥?when it came to three-day eventing and she still holds the unbeaten record of having won Badminton three years in a row. Mary King trained with her for three years as a teenager and said that she learnt more from Sheila Willcox than from any other single person.
This book was written when the second day of a three-day event included two phases of roads and tracks and one phase of steeplechase as well as the cross-country phase. This format was changed around 2002 and now only cross-country is run over the second day. It is rather fascinating to read about the somewhat more arduous format of three-day events in the early days. Sheila Willcox had 17 years of experience riding in eventing and her words of wisdom should not be forgotten or overlooked.
[Article] The summer of 1981 was indeed a fateful one for several young men who played collegiate summer ball in the Valley Baseball League (VBL) in Virginia鈥檚 Shenandoah Valley. For a trio of players on the New Market Rebels, it was the beginning of a journey that would see them enjoy lengthy major league careers. For three players on the Winchester Royals, Fate had seemingly propped open the door to legitimate dreams of future seasons in the big league sun as well, but 1981 would be the pinnacle of their baseball glory. It was a summer in which the team with Dennis Clow and Steve Peruso and Clay Daniel bested the team with Tom Browning and John Kruk and Dan Pasqua. Clow, Peruso, and Daniel together totaled 11 minor league seasons. Browning, Kruk, and Pasqua each played in the majors for 10 years or more.

Few would have predicted the degree of big league success for the Rebel trio. Browning was almost not allowed to return to the team, Pasqua was briefly dismissed from the team, and John Kruk, well "Johnny" did not fare well when he came up against a broom-stick wielding grandma after he accidentally spit tobacco juice on her carpet.

It was the Winchester Royals, founded by Keith Lupton who would go on to be named the executive of the year three times in three different minor leagues, who were the superior team. Their determination, their ability to stage improbable comebacks, and most of all their talent made the 1981 Winchester Royals one of the great summer league teams ever assembled.

Set as it was against the backdrop of the 1981 major league players鈥?strike, the story of the battle for the President鈥檚 Cup between the Rebels and the Royals epitomizes that mix of glory and poignancy that produces such passion in those who love the game.

An inspiring and easy read at only 7,000 words.
